Relief from Ancient Egypt, Ramesesid period (1295-1069 BC). Limestone. Signed in its upper margin. Provenance: European private collection. In good state of preservation. Measures: 32 x 59 x 8,5 cm. Egyptian relief from the Ramesside period worked on limestone. It represents a male personage in profile, something usual in Egyptian art. Although it has not reached our days, this fragment with relief would continue vertically, presenting the whole body of the personage, and would have additional scenes arranged in parallel registers without interruption. The Egyptian relief had three fundamental purposes: religious, political-propagandistic and/or the representation of daily life. Due to the absence of divine elements and inscriptions (which may be commemorative, especially propagandistic and allegorical), the relief in question would be a representation of everyday life. It is likely that it had other characters hierarchized by size, a common feature in Egyptian art (in fact, many times there were main scenes that occupied the main part, while around them were the secondary scenes). As in the rest of the Egyptian reliefs, our exceptional specimen respects the two-dimensionality typical of this art, as well as the law of frontality (in which the character turns towards the spectator the thoracic surface so that the waist can be divided with an imaginary vertical line, in two halves of equal, although the eye remains in front). As for the time of realization of this piece, it should be noted how the historical period comprising the nineteenth and twentieth dynasties is called the Ramesesid period, after the name of its most important pharaohs (Ramses). Dimensions 32 x 59 x 8,5 cm.
