Of elongated form, the sides carved with a deer on a rock on one side and a monkey by a rock on the other side, in a continuous rocky landscape with a pine and a slender willow tree growing from the openwork rocky base and extending up the sides to form a handle. The patina of a dark caramel brown colour. Several small chips, the rim of the spout ground down. Weight 177 g. Deer and monkey are a frequent motif in Chinese decorative arts. The word deer (lu) is homophonous with emolument, and monkey (hou) and marquis have the same pronunciation. Together they express the wish for emolument and high rank.
