镇纸进入书房最早可见于文字的记录是在南北朝时期，至今已逾一千五百多年。唐宋时期的镇纸基本都是以石制为主。而到明清两代，多有尺镇，成对出现，放置于纸本两侧。 鹌鹑是古代绘画常见的吉祥鸟，稻穗象征丰足的太平盛世。鹌鹑与稻禾相伴，取其谐音“安和”，代表“岁岁（穗穗）平安”。该对铜镇以精铜制作，通体鎏金，持之压手，图案錾刻极其精美。
