Hankey studied at the Chester School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. He was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Watercolour Society, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers.
