瘦骨罗汉，又称雪山大士。其故事最早出现于南北朝传译到中国来的佛教经典《大般涅盘经》中：相传佛祖释迦牟尼，本为古印度迦毗罗卫国凈饭王的太子，但因目睹众生疾苦，即抛弃权位入雪山苦行，“唯食诸果……绝形深涧，不涉人间，结草为庵，被鹿皮衣”，静坐思维，不避风雨，坚持不懈达六年之久，身体也变得极度消瘦，筋骨暴露，却终于在痛苦中得道，参透成佛。这一故事随佛教传入中土，历经隋唐，也逐渐家喻户晓，深入人心。凡俗之身如能经得起苦行的考验，便可修成正果，更常被用来赞誉人们安贫乐道的志趣。
