元末四大家之一倪瓒，淡泊名利，孤高自许，且为人颇具个性，癖好甚多。洁癖就是倪瓒最为有名的一癖，“洗桐”便是一例。据明代《寓圃杂记云林遗事》记载，一次有客人夜宿倪瓒家中。夜间倪瓒听闻客人咳嗽，天一亮即马上命人搜查院落庭园，寻找客人痰迹。仆人们遍寻不着，最后倪瓒自己于桐树根处找到客人痰迹，遂命人以水洗桐。此后，“洗桐”就成为文人洁身自好的象征，流传于后世。明代画家崔子忠即有名作《云林洗桐图》传世。
