Putz, Leo Meran 1869 - 1940 69 x 56 cm Im Kahn. Oil/canvas, signed and dated 1901 lower right. From the estate of the art historian Dr. Ruth Stein. Lit.: Helmut Putz, Leo Putz: 1869-1940. Werkverzeichnis in zwei Bänden, Wolnzach 1994, catalogue raisonné p. 631, no. 215 with fig. Ruth Stein, Leo Putz: mit einem Verzeichnis der Gemälde und bildartigen Entwürfe, Vienna 1974, catalogue raisonné p. 128 no. 75 and p. 17 colour plate I. The painting belongs to the series of the so-called Kahnbilder which the artist painted around 1900 on Weißlinger See or at Seeon near Chiemsee in Bavaria. If Putz satisfied a certain salon taste with scenes from the world of operas or fairy tales, as a plein air painter he turned to a modern audience who appreciated French Impressionism. The subject of a woman sitting in a boat could also come from Claude Monet. In contrast to Monet, Putz choose the subject very narrowly and shows neither the lakeshore nor the immediate surroundings. He concentrates entirely on the figure of the young woman in the bright Sunday dress who has taken seat in the front part of the boat. Putz is not interested in capturing a certain place or a certain person. He seeks an ornamental expression in the visualisation of the brushwork that goes beyond the representation of atmosphere and mood.
