TWO LATE GOTHIC RELIEF CARVINGS OF THE PASSION OF CHRIST possibly 16th century 69 x 57, der Rahmen 101 x 146 cm The Judas Kiss. Crucifixion of Christ. Two panels made of softwood, the figures in relief possibly linden and worked separately. Partly shortened on the sides and fitted into a large, ebonized wooden frame. The polychromy later (19th century) and worn with remnants of old polychromy. Damages due to age and restorations. Property of a Thuringian noble family, formerly inventory of Poschwitz Castle. The sculpture is visible on an old photography of the "Turmzimmer". Lit. "Über ein halbes Jahrtausend auf angestammter Scholle". Geschichte der Herren von der Gabelentz auf Poschwitz 1388-1938. Bibliographisches Institut Leipzig 1938, p. 106. The reliefs show strong influences from paintings and graphic works by Michael Wolgemut (1434-1519), among others. The painting "The Kiss of Judas" from the workshop of Michael Wolgemut (1434-1519) was designed for the high altar of the town church in Schwabach (around 1506/1508), the relief panel shows very similar combinations of figures.
