AN OVERSIZED BERGERE FOR GEORG CONON VON DER GABELENTZ 19th century 106 x 83 x 78 cm Sherrywood, partially ebonized. Old inventory label to foot. Extensive damages due to age. With a walking stick (The cardboard cut-off is withdrawn). Property of a Thuringian noble family, formerly inventory of Poschwitz Castle. The chair was custom-made for Georg Conon von der Gabelentz, who was over two meters tall and couldn't sit comfortably on any of the usual chair sizes from the time. Georg Conon von der Gabelentz (1840-1893) was a well-known sinologist and linguist. His grammar of classical Chinese, which appeared in 1881, is considered to be his main work and was reissued unchanged until 1953.
