The chair was custom-made for Georg Conon von der Gabelentz, who was over two meters tall and couldn't sit comfortably on any of the usual chair sizes from the time. Georg Conon von der Gabelentz (1840-1893) was a well-known sinologist and linguist. His grammar of classical Chinese, which appeared in 1881, is considered to be his main work and was reissued unchanged until 1953.
