Jin Cheng, style names Gongbo and Gongbei, was born in Peking to a wealthy family of officials. From 1902 to 1905 he studied law in London and back in China became Secretary of State Affairs and founder of the exhibition of the Palace Collections (Guwu chenlie suo), the first public museum of China. In Peking he became the leading figure of the painters in the traditionalist style and advocated the studying of old masters. Many of his paintings are brilliant imitations of old masterworks in the Palace Collection.
