signed LIUHAISU, inscribed, and with one seal of the artist inscribed by Zhu Qizhan and with one seal inscribed by Tang Yun and with one seal inscribed by Lu Yanshao and with one seal dated 1971 year ink and color on paper, hanging scroll Liu Haisu (1896–1994) was a painter and educator who combined Western and Eastern techniques, and advocated for this style as a means of modernizing art education in China. Born in Changzhou in the Jiangsu Province, Liu traveled to Shanghai as a teenager, and went on to establish the Shanghai Academy, the first art college in modern China.
