Around 1900. Bronze, dark patinated. Signed 'J. Uphues', foundry stamp 'AKTIEN-GES. FORM. H. GLADENBECK & SON FRIEDRICHSHAGEN. Arch dam. Figure: h. 34 cm, marble base (min. chipped): h. 2 cm. - The sculptor created the subject of the archer, inspired by antiquity, in 1884 and received the gold medal for it in Melbourne in 1889. The Gladenbeck bronze foundry offered it in various sizes. - German sculptor. As a master student of Reinhold Begas, Uphues was an esteemed monument sculptor of the Wilhelminian era.
