Description
Translation provided by Youdao
The Piazzetta in Venice, the square leading from St Mark's Square to the Grand Canal, is the stage on which Louis de Caullery has elegantly dressed men and women perform. In the foreground one sees black gondolas from which figures disembark. The square is depicted in strict central perspective, emphasising the depth of the pictorial space. The Doge's Palace on the right, the Biblioteca Marciana built by Jacopo Sansovino and the Campanile on the left, St Mark's Basilica at the back - and the two columns with St Mark´s winged Lion and St Theodore - this was the magnificent, overwhelming scenery travellers saw when they arrived in Venice. Dimensions 51 x 66 cm Artist or Maker Louis de Caullery Medium Oil on panel (parquetted) Provenance German private ownership. Notes VAT: Margin scheme
