Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Turtle Ship" Signed lower right. Original oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands History's Greatest Fighting Ships sheetlet issued December 1, 1998. History's first ironclad ship was built in Korea in the 16th century and resembled a huge turtle shell with spikes. Propelled by oars and sails, with a dragon's head in front and a turtle tail in the rear, plated with armor and outfitted with a formidable array of cannon, Turtle Ships were more than a match for opposing ships.
