Description

A beautiful medal with Lincoln's portrait on the obverse facing right, with 1809 and 1909. The reverse has the Suns rays shining down upon a seashore with waves crashing upon a cliff with an American Eagle on top. The words Preserve, Protect, Defend appear above the waters. This is now considered the model from which Brenner made the Lincoln Cent in 1909. Apparently only 20 pieces were struck for Brenner before the die broke so it is rare and does not often appear for public auction. From the ones previously seen by the cataloguer this medal is far superior Smedley #84, Obtained March 1982, Johnson & Jensen Lot 123 envelope included.
