A rare Chinese commemorative propaganda banner depicting the famous Chinese soldier Qiu Xiaoyun (1931-1952), a Korean War martyr, hand-painted on dark-coloured cotton fabric, 1950/60. The Chinese writing on the banner translates as follows: On the right: Whatever the enemy opposes, we must support (*quotation from Chairman Mao on 16 September 1939). On the left: Whatever the enemy supports, we must oppose (*quotation from Chairman Mao on 16 September 1939). At the top: What to do if you are hit by sarcasm? What should I do if I meet Comrade Zhichen?(*quotations from Chairman Mao in the 1950s). In the centre, above the image: Qiu Xiaoyun explored the terrain, roads and enemy’s bunker assuredly. In paying homage and respect to Korean War hero Qiu Xiaoyun, Chairman Mao also uses Qiu’s brave actions and death as an example of a true comrade. 90 x 124 cm. Provenance: Private collection, Sydney.
