A watercolor and ink on paper by Hugh Mesibov from 1937. Hubert Bernard 'Hugh' Mesibov was an American artist (b. 1916, d.2016). The watercolor depicts an industrial landscape with a water tower, train tracks and the train station. The air has been muddied with smoke from the stacks attached to the buildings. The work is signed "Hubert Mesibov" in the lower right corner, and dated 1937. This work has never been exhibited or offered for sale. Dimensions are: framed the work measures, 17 inches tall X 20 inches wide, 43.18 cm X 50.8 cm. All measurements are approximate. Condition: Some discoloration to the matting. No noted damage to the watercolor, not inspected outside of the frame. Provenance: Acquired by the consignor's father, Ralph Novak, from the artist who was a family friend. Offered at auction on behalf of the Ashby Ponds Benevolent fund. Hugh Mesibov was a 20th century American artist whose work displays key elements of the New York experience including Surrealist, Abstract Expressionist and figurative works across multiple mediums. A recipient of national and international acclaim, Mesibov is included in America’s great collection of contemporary art including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Barnes foundation, and the Whitney Museum of Art.
