A gray mica schist stone sculpture of Shakyamuni Buddha dating from the 2nd to 3rd century CE and originating from the Gandhara region of Pakistan. It comes with a wooden stand. The Buddha wears a thick garment, which covers both shoulders and features a cowl neck, rendered in thick folds. In his left hand, he grips part of this garment. His right hand, while missing, likely made the gesture of blessing, or the abhaya mudra. A long mustache is outlined on his upper lip, and an urna protrudes from his forehead. His wavy hair is pulled up into a bun as an ushnisha, which features a small, square drilled hole, possibly for the placement of a relic or other ornament. Behind his head is the remnant of a nimbus. The Buddha sits upon a simple, rectangular pedestal. The back of the sculpture is unfinished. Dimensions are: the sculpture measures 14 1/2 inches tall X 11 1/2 inches wide X 4 inches deep, 36.8 cm X 29.2 cm X 10.2 cm. All measurements are approximate. Condition: There is age appropriate wear including wear throughout. There are areas of loss to the nimbus and pedestal, and the right hand is missing altogether. The back of the sculpture has been drilled. Provenance: From a private CT collection.
