William Klein (American, 1928) Portrait of Anne-Marie Edvina (Hair), 1961 Gelatin silver print, ferrotyped 8-5/8 x 11-5/8 inches (21.9 x 29.5 cm) (image/sheet) Signed in pencil by an unknown hand, with New York Herald stamp, verso. LITERATURE: Bibliotheque National, "Salon International du Portrait Photographie," exhibition catalogue, Paris, April 28-May 24, 1961, illustrated; New York Herald Tribune, April 27, 1961, illustrated. The subject of the first and only International Salon of Portrait Photography, 21-year old Anne-Marie Edvina was selected for the "rare symmetry of her face." 30 noted photographers were invited to shoot Edvina, ultimately producing a remarkably multifaceted study of a single subject. The photographers ranged from Surrealists Man Ray and Maurice Tabard to photojournalists Robert Doisneau and Edouard Boubat, with Klein using his background as a fashion photographer to contribute this sleek, edgy, almost brooding image.
