Dia.: 29 cm This dish is the only recorded dish with the portrait of Wlliam II of Orange. The sovereign has been depicted on a number of tiles, one of them is in the Rijksmuseum (link available on our website). Given the date of 1643, the year of creation of the source engraving, and the death of the monarch in 1650, this dish is to be dated in between or very shortly thereafter, say 1645-1655. William II (27 May 1626 - 6 November 1650) was sovereign Prince of Orange and Stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Guelders, Overijssel and Groningen in the United Provinces of the Netherlands from 14 March 1647 until his death three years later. His only child, William III, reigned as King of England, Ireland, and Scotland. Ref.:- The source for this portrait is the 1643 engraving by Jonas Suyderhoef (1614-1686). The engraving was a design by Pieter Soutman (1593/1601-1657), based on a portrait painting of the then 12 or 13 years old prince in 1638/1639, by Gerard van Honthorst (1592-1656).
