Early Culpeper-Type Compound Monocular Microscope, c. 1735 Unsigned but attributed to Matthew Loft, London, octagonal oak box base with accessory drawer at the front, three square curving legs on diamond-shaped plates, gimbal with 1½-in.-diameter single mirror, asymmetrical shaped brass stage with openings for forceps, fish-plate and condenser, outer 2¾-in.-diameter pasteboard tube covered in mottled black-and-white shagreen, inner draw-tube covered in green vellum with gold-tooled lines and inked focus lines, turned lignum vitae collar and upper parts, biconvex eye lens, threaded cap with brass sliding dust cover; with 4 wood-bound objectives (numbered with dots 2, 3, 4 and 5), brass fish-plate and specimens turret, height closed 16 in. - Literature: Billings, "Microscope Collection", p. 173. - A rare and early microscope in good condition.
