Comment(s): Most of Toledo's kites are unsigned; only occasionally does he sign them, and then generally on the verso. Please note that the kite was photographed with the tail folded up - it does have the original tail. These art kites are created from a stencil drawn and cut by Toledo in Arches paper. The stencil is then pressed into a hand made sheet of paper and hand colored. When separated, the resulting contrast reveals the image. Some kites are hand-sprayed with dyes to create background effects, etc. Francisco Benjamín López Toledo is arguably Mexico's most famous living artist. He studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de Oaxaca and the Centro Superior de Artes Aplicadas del Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes, Mexico, where he studied graphic arts with Guillermo Silva Santamaria.
