A working replica of Salisbury Cathedral clock, constructed by Mr Alan Salisbury, 260cm H x 84cm W x 150cm D (approx.), Clock dial measures 66cm diameter Note: Working from a newspaper article which mentioned the number of teeth in the principal gear wheel, along with detailed photographs, Mr Salisbury calculated the ratios required to recreate one of the earliest known tower clocks and then spent some two years creating the working replica. Working to such a large scale presented unique challenges, not least finding the optimum length for the verge and foliot mechanism to create the clock's signature eight second tick. Mr Salisbury also used traditional hand methods to measure and cut by hand the clock mechanism. An additional gear mechanism was also added to operate the clock hands with a traditional clock face as it is believed the original clock was faceless. The clock can be set to ring at anytime with the ingenious timing mechanism powered by the hanging weight and regulated by the fly (air brake) at the rear of the clock
