A William IV truncheon or baton, early 19th century, of long tapering form with anti-slip knop, with painted 'WRIV' royal cypher and 'No.60', 60.5cm long Note: At the time of William IV (1830-37), no formal police force existed, but many areas had their own regional defence forces and issued truncheons to their members. The truncheons often carried the Royal Arms of the reigning Monarch and were often numbered for a particular constable.
