|瓷砚见于晋，至隋渐多且形体渐大。此砚围墙较矮，砚池内露胎无釉，中心部位隆起如扁馒头。池内素胎，为的是能增加摩擦力，利于尽快成墨；中部微微隆起，不仅有利研磨，能延长磨损消耗，而且促使墨汁向旁边的沟池流聚，以便蘸用。因其足作若干个长圆实心葡萄状（或如水滴状），等距均匀地粘附在砚盘的底边，足上施釉。故以足形名之水滴形足辟雍砚。又因古之大学，校址圆形，四周围以水池，前门外有便桥，砚形似古之大学校址，故此又可名之葡萄足辟雍砚。古代匠师的制作理念，一言以蔽之，大巧若拙，朴实无华又充满智慧之美。冯先铭先生主编的《中国古陶瓷图典》中载有与此砚造型极为相近的青釉砚台。
