Ca. 100 AD. Roman. An enamelled bronze brooch in the shape of a rabbit decorated with a central star flanked by two incised rabbits; good condition. Small brooches, often in whimsical animal forms, were worn both by Roman soldiers stationed in the provinces and by the native population. Though brooches in these forms appear throughout the Roman world, the distribution of finds and the archaeological remains of workshops suggest that the major centres of production were Britain and Gaul. For a similar Roman brooch, see https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/477361. Size: L:16mm / W:24mm ; 3.3g. Provenance: From the collection of a gentleman based in London; formerly with a British gallery; acquired in the 1990s.
