Ca. 400-500 AD. Roman. A very rare Late Imperial Roman glass flask with a globular body and funnel neck tapering towards the bottom with ribbed decoration below the lip. The dark orange, translucent body is embellished with trailed dark green decoration. Good condition. On the basis of archaeological excavations' results, Keller (2015, 135) suggest that good quality Late Roman glass vessels such as this one were often kept in the dining/reception rooms or the entrance room of a house. This indicates that glass vessels played an important role in late Antique dining and society: they could have been used as a showpiece and indicator of social standing or wealth within the Late Roman household, especially when displayed in the public area of the house (see: Keller, D. (2015). 'Glass in the domestic space: contextual analysis of late Roman glass assemblages from Ephesus and Petra', in Bayley, J., Freestone, I., & Jackson, C. (2015). Glass of the Roman World. Oxford And Philadelphia: Oxbow Books, 124-137). Size: L:115mm / W:80mm ; 68g. Provenance: From the private collection of Mr. R. Unger; previously with a London gallery; acquired in the 1980s on the UK art market.
