PROVENANCE: Private collections of J. Von Erwin Jr. of Missouri, by inheritance. Measurements: Height: 27 1/8" Width: 15 1/2" Depth: 7 1/2" Antique VERY FINE Pair Zitan Carved Dragon Reliefs Chinese 4 Doors Scholar Cabinets. Each is of rectangular form and constructed from panels of Zitan with beautiful graining and rich deep-purplish-brown tone. The hat chest has two square panel doors. The doors open to reveal a single shelf. The larger cabinet below has rectangular panel doors. The doors open to reveal the shelved interior with two drawers and a hidden compartment fronted by a horizontal panel one cabinet. The legs are of rectangular section and are joined by aprons and spandrels at the bottom. Front panel elaborately open-works carved with vigorous dragons amidst scrolling ruyi clouds. The Zitan wood display smooth lustrous dense hardwood with dark purple-brown hues patina and feathery fine grain.
