Activity on the Quay Signed lower right Oil on canvas, 78.3 x 113.6 cm Provenance: Private collection, the Netherlands Note: Johannes Hermanus Barend Koekkoek - with Jan H.B. Koekkoek as most common signature - was a Dutch painter belonging to the Koekkoek dynasty. Jan H.B. Koekkoek was the third son of marine painter Hermanus Koekkoek (1815-1882) and, like his brothers, was trained by his father. His father's influence is evident in the careful Romantic style and the fine detailing of his early sea and river views. The present painting is a clear example of his early refined brushstroke. Later, after moving to Hilversum in Het Gooi In 1864, the cradle of the Laren School, he started to adopt a looser brushwork. From that time on, he painted mainly beach and seascapes and scenes from fishermen's life in a more realistic style influenced by the Hague School.
