Buddha; Chinese school; twentieth century.Rose quartz and wooden base.Measures: 37.5 x 35 x 22 cm; 8 cm (base).Weight: 37 kgr.Sculpture made of rose quartz carved in such a way that it represents a resting Buddha, along with two other smaller figures that are arranged in the area of the shoulders of the central figure. The main figure stands out for its leading position in the sculptural ensemble, its dimensions and the detail of its workmanship. Examples of this are some outstanding aspects such as, for example, the uncovered belly and the smiling face. Characteristics that associate the sculptural representation with Hotei, Buddhist god of joy and happiness, giver of good luck to whoever caresses her prominent belly. It is worth mentioning that the great expressiveness of the countenance, the relaxed aspect of the attitudes and the naturalism with which the generous flesh and the softness of the flesh is captured is characteristic of Chinese statuary, as can be seen in this piece. Hotei, popularly known as "Fat Buddha", his mythological origin dates back to the time of the Chinese Liang Dynasty. He is believed to have been a Buddhist monk who, due to his benevolent nature, came to be considered an incarnation of the bodhisattva Maitreya. It presents several lakshana or iconographic symbols typical of the plastic representations of buddhas and bodhisattvas, of sacred significance: The eyelids are a symbol of spiritual concentration and also of purity, due to their similarity to the petals of the lotus, and complete a serene face with a sketched smile, symbol of the balance and serenity of a perfect being; it is possible to intuit the elongated lobes of the ears, which allude to the large earrings worn by the members of the upper classes in India contemporary to Sakyamuni, and which represent the concepts of greatness, nobility and wisdom. The piece becomes an interesting way to learn about oriental art, since rose quartz was a highly appreciated material in China for its aesthetic characteristics and for its supposed healing properties. At the same time, its translucent aspect gives the piece beautiful contrasts that indicate the purity of the material.
