Li-type tripod vessel. China, late Neolithic, 6500-1600 BC).Decorated pottery.Attached thermoluminescence study.Measurements: 26 x 16.5 cm.It is a tripod vessel, of the li type, with a horizontally curved lip, cylindrical body and three hollow feet. The inside of the body shows traces of warping, while the lip seems to have been made on the lathe. It is burnished on the exterior except for the feet, and is partially covered with traces of cold decoration of white and red pigments on brown. The geometric motif of spirals or "clouds" covers the lip of the vessel and the galbo. On the galbo the upper part of the design is delimited by a horizontal white line, below which a row of "clouds" extends. The "li" tripod vessel typology is a cooking utensil characteristic of the central plains of China in the late Neolithic period, and of the sites of the Longshan culture and northwest China in the Shany and Zhou dynasties (ca. 1700-221 BC). This type of tripod vessel is called "li" in the form of a yu (jar). Since this type of vessel is not so suitable for heating, they were mainly used for storage, and also played a major role in funerary objects.
