A FINE BINDING OF ‘THE COSTUME OF CHINA’ WITH ‘THE PUNISHMENTS OF CHINA’. 1801 and 1805. London, by William Alexander and George Henry Mason (1770 – 1851), bound together, with forty-eight and twenty-two and plates, marbled end pages, with an oval bookbinder's label, Gebonden door J. Fröding à Amsterdam, bound in full calf with gilt decoration, slipcase, 37.5 x 30cm. (2) 一八零一 、一八零五 《中國民俗與刑罰》 George Henry Mason (1770-1851) was a British army officer, Major in the late 102nd Regiment of Foot (Royal Madras Fusiliers) raised by the East India Company, 1795, and then Lieutenant-Colonel in 1801. Mason had travelled to Canton in 1789. These works were important in introducing China to a Western audience.
