"Fun Bags," 2005 Cotton, lycra, fur, woods, and pins Appears unsigned 96.5" H x 45" W x 21.5" D Provenance: Anton Kern Gallery, New York, NY The Blake Byrne Collection Notes: Living and working between her native Amsterdam and Los Angeles, Lara Schnitger has developed a thriving career on both sides of the Atlantic. Her work has been widely exhibited in venues inclusive of the UCLA Hammer, PS1 in New York, The Royal Academy in London, the Museum of Contemporary art in Los Angeles, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Schnitger's work frequently employs everyday materials in the fabrication of largescale, engaging works of art. She combines feminist, sex-positive messaging with sculptural installation in a playful and sensory manner. "Fun Bags," is exemplary of her cheeky, if irreverent style. A largescale form that vaguely recalls the silhouette of a woman, and yet is evocative of something one might encounter at a carnival funhouse, awaits animation and participation from the viewer. Exploratory and fetishistic components such as lycra stockings and faux fur elements reference the female body as a plaything to be touched, explored and pet.
