William St. John Harper (American, 1851–1910) Autumn Signed, inscribed and dated 'Wm-St-J-HARPER-1891./COPYRIGHT.1892' bottom left, oil on canvas 30 1/4 x 44 1/2 in. (76.8 x 113cm) Provenance Private Collection, Princeton, New Jersey. Footnote: Exhibited "Sixty-Seventh Annual Exhibition, "National Academy of Design, New York, New York, April 4-May 14, 1892 (won the Thomas B. Clarke Prize). Note The present painting won the Thomas B. Clarke Prize in 1892, no doubt prompting the artist's election as an Associate at the National Academy of Design. Following his win, St. John Harper seldom exhibited again. Today, he is mostly known for the portraits of women and children he would capture often in a state of bliss harmony. Condition report: The wax-lined canvas in overall good condition, with extensive restoration throughout. Examination under UV light reveals some (minor) restoration at upper left corner in the leaves, along the top outer edge, especially at upper center right (most likely inapainted abrasions due to old frame rubbing), and in the upper right corner, going down along the right outer edge of the canvas. Some minor inpainting at center right in the backround, and along the bottom outer edge at bottom left. The figure is completely intact. See Specialist's pictures for more details. Frame: 33 1/2 x 47 in.
