This bronze rendition captures the classic tale of the abductionof Europa by Zeus disguised as a bull. In Greek mythology Europa was aPhoenician woman of archaic, high kin. The story of her abduction by Zeus in the form of a white bull was a Cretan story. The mythographerstell that Zeus was enamored of Europe and decided to seduce or ravishher. He transformed himself into a tame white bull and mixed in withher father herds. While Europa and her female attendants weregathering flowers, she saw the bull, caressed his flanks, andeventually got onto his back. Zeus took that opportunity and ran tothe sea and swam, with her on his back, to the island of Crete. Hethen revealed his true identity, and Europa became the first queen ofCrete. Zeus later re-created the shape of the white bull in the stars, which is now known as the constellation Taurus. The Taurusconstellation corresponds to the motion of spring symbolizingabundance and replenishment. This multi-meaning work of art was castusing the age-old method of lost-wax casting and stained with a brownpatina tarnish and mounted upon a marble base. Dimensions: Height 13 X Width 17 inches. Weight: 45 LBS.
