A pair of Chinese green-ground square vases dating from the Republic period. Each vase depicts four famille rose scenes of birds and flowers on a lotus tracery ground. There are stylized leaf and ruyi bands around the mouth, neck, and foot. The interior is glazed turquoise, and the bottom has a 6-character mark and a stamp reading "CHINA." Dimensions are: 10 1/4 inches tall X 4 inches wide, 26 cm X 10.2 cm. All measurements are approximate. Condition: There is a chip to the bottom of one vase and glaze loss to the bottom of the other vase. Provenance: From the estate of a surgeon in the Washington, D.C. area. The items were acquired from various auction houses including Christie's and Sotheby's prior to the 1990s. High resolution images can be found here.
