Christ; Spain, 17th century.Carved and gilded boxwood.Measurements: 41 x 32.5 cm; 50.5 x 41 cm (frame).Figure of devotional character made of boxwood carved and gilded, representing the figure of Christ, with great detail in the anatomical treatment, the result of a careful and thorough study of the natural. The different muscles in tension can be clearly appreciated, how the ribs of the consumed and exhausted body protrude. It is a suffering anatomy. The body of Christ transmits, in a totally naturalistic way, the suffering and tension to which he is subjected. The figure is extremely thin but strong, with marked musculature, revealing the physical effort. The torso is stretched due to the forced posture of the Crucified, and his body falls forming a slight curvature, having lost its strength shortly before expiring. The artist has taken care of all these details so that the faithful feel moved by the suffering of the Savior, to understand the magnitude of his sacrifice in favor of humanity. With regard to the composition, the purity cloth plays an important role, knotted on one side and in the center and falling vertically with voluminous folds. It reinforces the asymmetry derived from the deviation of the body, and is worked with great volume and detail.
