John Emms (British, 1843-1912). "Hunt Scene with Hounds", oil on canvas. Signed lower left; T. Richardson and Company, London label on stretcher. Note: John Emms achieved notoriety in the nineteenth century for his hunting and sporting art scenes. A hunter himself, his works such as Hunt Scene with Hounds and his many equestrian and dog subjects won him acclaim, particularly at the Royal Academy and the Society of British Artists. Born in 1841 to artist Henry William Emms, he studied under Lord Frederick Leighton (1830-1896) in the 1870s, assisting with The Ten Virgins mural at the parish church in Lyndhurst, England. He built a house and studio in Lyndhurst, living and working there until his death in 1912. Approx. 31" x 42.125" (frame), 25.5" x 36.5 (canvas)
