Note: Lin Zexu (1785-1850), a man of Houguan in Fujian Province, with the characters Fu, Shao Mu and Shi Lin. A politician, thinker, and poet in the Qing Dynasty, he was a top official. Because he advocates the prohibition of opium, he is known as a national hero in China. Some people say that Lin Zexu is a national hero who banned smoking; some people say that he is a great official in the Qing Dynasty; others say that he is a water conservator who loves the people like his son, but few people know that he is actually a prolific poet and calligrapher. In the seventeenth year of Daoguang, that is, in 1837, Lin Zexu was 52 years old. On the first month of the year, he was promoted from the governor of Jiangsu to the governor of Huguang, officially from the second in command at the provincial and ministerial level to the top in command. However, with this promotion, he began to focus on the British opium, until two years later, the matter was pushed to the climax of modern history. Lin Zexu loved calligraphy since he was a child, and he has been practicing calligraphy all his life. In the early days, Lin Zexu copied the calligraphy of the Eastern Jin calligrapher Wang Xizhi. Later, he copied the calligraphy of many calligraphers such as Yan Zhenqing and Ouyang Xun in the Tang Dynasty, and Zhao Mengfu in the Yuan Dynasty. Lin Zexu's calligraphy can be said to have profound knowledge and distinctive style. During the period of the Republic of China, someone praised Lin Zexu: "The calligraphy is neat and beautiful, with unremitting brushstrokes, and I sigh for it."
