Alexander Stephens Free Franked Cover addressed in his hand. 5.75" x 3", no place; September 2, no year. A transmittal cover signed and addressed in his hand to "Hon. Howell Cobb." Signed, "Alexander H. Stephens." After the Civil War, the former Vice President of the Confederacy served five months in prison and then, in 1866, was elected to the U.S. Senate where he served until 1882 when he resigned to take the office of governor of Georgia. Howell Cobb (1815-1868) served five terms in the U.S. House, as secretary of the treasury under President Buchanan, and as governor of Georgia. He became one of the founders of the Confederacy and later served as a major general in the Confederate Army. Condition: Rubbed with some light soiling.
