William T. Sherman Autograph Letter Signed. Three pages of a bifolium, 5" x 7.75" (sight), Washington, D.C.; January 3, 1883. Addressed to General Jacob Dolson Cox on lined Headquarters Army of the United States stationery. In this letter Sherman declines an invitation to attend an event for Ex-Officers of the Army and Navy. He then writes that he hopes to meet with Cox the next time he is in Cincinnati. It reads in part: "…I must as usual beg off – This is my last month in Washington and my social obligations are simply overwhelming…I will be near Cincinnati and so estimate that I can follow my own inclination better where I assure you that it will give me unusual pleasure to visit my old Comrades of Cincinnati…" Signed, "W.T. Sherman." Matted and framed with an engraved portrait of Sherman to an overall size of 21.25" x 11.5". Not examined outside of the frame. Condition: Smoothed folds. Lightly rubbed.
