An ink inscription on recto reads: "Rebecca Charlie Rosa / Aged 10 9 7 / Slave children from N. Orleans." Photographer J.K. Wagner, Pierson's Block, with 2 cent George Washington tax stamp. These three were the children of white slave owners and black slaves. They were freed by General Benjamin Butler in New Orleans and used for propaganda purposes by anti-slavery groups to raise money for the emancipated Louisiana slave school that was established by Phillip Bacon. The children were chosen specifically for their fair skin to generate sympathy with northern audiences. Condition: Top edge has been trimmed. Lightly toned and rubbed.
