Mata Hari Autograph Letter Signed, "Mata Hari." Two pages (of a bifolium), in French, 7" x 8.75", Neuilly St. James, Paris, France; November 28, 1911. A letter from Mata Hari to an unnamed "Gentlemen", possibly regarding contracting with an agent. The letter reads, in English translation: "I am sending you one of the many letters I have been receiving for a long time now from Mr. de Haan. As you see, he has had my name printed on the back of his letter, and indicates at the top of the page that I can be hired from his place. What should be done? Shall I keep silent? Or do you wish to write to him that I am bound to you by contract. Perhaps we should take the initiative in order not to have to deal with a surprise later on. Are you thinking of Bakst? Best regards, Mata – Hari" Margaretha Geertruida MacLeod (née Zelle) (1876-1917), better known by the stage name Mata Hari, was a Dutch exotic dancer and courtesan who was convicted of being a spy for Germany during World War I. Despite her having admitted under interrogation to taking money to work as a German spy, many people still believe she was innocent because the French Army needed a scapegoat. She was executed by firing squad in France October 15, 1917. Letter is accompanied by a typed English transcription. Condition: The letter has a horizontal fold and light wrinkles; otherwise very good. HID03101062020 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
