Erwin Schrodinger Typed Letter Signed. Two pages, 8.75" x 11", Zurich; September 3, 1927. Fascinating and lengthy letter written the year after he published the Schrodinger equation, which proved the basis for his 1933 Nobel Prize win. It is addressed to a Mr. Geheimrat and typed in German on his personal stationery. He announces he is leaving the University of Zurich for the Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin, where he would work closely with Albert Einstein for a number of years. He goes on to discuss exponential decay and spectral lines while briefly touching upon the current political climate. It reads in part [English translation]: "...I am really pleased to be going to Berlin. The people there made every conceivable accommodation for me. I could see that they really wanted me there, and that is a very pleasant feeling after all...Your reason to avoid Como are essentially the same as my own. One would most assuredly hear things that one would not want to hear. I do not like helping people celebrate their own great men, since their adored Duce said of Walther von der Vogelweide, ‘We value his poetry, even though it is just mediocre,' (or something like that). I was very pleased to hear that the exponential decay is now ascertained completely. This really precludes all previous objections, and it shows that at this time the decay is not yet covered by theory. It is touching, how little this disturbs most people. They generally pretend that theory of ‘transition probabilities' is completely assured..." Condition: Smoothed folds and light creasing. HID03101062020 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
