It was written on Lawrence’s personalized University of California Radiation Laboratory stationery. It reads in part: "…I suspect today we…have no idea of the developments ahead in the next twenty years. The new great accelerators – the cosmotron, the bevatron and the alternating gradient synchrotrons now on the drawing boards surely will bring us another new world of nuclear physics." Signed, "Ernest O. Lawrence." Ernest O. Lawrence Typed Letter Signed. One page, 6.75" x 9.75", Berkeley, California; December 20, 1954. The letter is addressed to Frank Groom Kirtz on Lawrence’s personalized University of California Radiation Laboratory stationery and introduces his exhibition paper. Signed in blue ink, "Ernest O. Lawrence served as a Professor of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley from 1928 until his death. He became the Director of their Radiation Laboratory in 1936. In 1929 Lawrence invented the cyclotron, which allows for nuclear particles to accelerate to very high velocities without the use of high voltages, which won him the Nobel Prize in Physics ten years later. The cyclotron was applied to the investigation of nuclear properties and led to research into electromagnetic separation of elements, most notably for the Manhattan Project. Condition: Manuscript letter has seven small spots of dried adhesive residue on verso from prior mounting that are visible on recto. Edges are lightly toned. Smoothed mail folds to both.
