James Monroe Autograph Letter Signed. One page of a bifolium, 7.75" x 9.75", Oak Hill [Virginia]; February 14, 1826. A letter of introduction written for Orris Paine and addressed to a Samuel L. Southard in Washington. It reads in part: "Mr. Orris Paine, who is now employed by a temporary appointment, as a clerk in Judge Anderson's office, is desirous of obtaining a prominent status, of that kind, in one of the depts. in the govt. with a view to promote his object, I take the liberty, to introduce him to your acquaintance, in the hope that it may be in your power, either to give him such imployment, or to aid him in obtaining it..." Signed, "James Monroe." Condition: Uniform block of toning presumably from being matted and sunned. Toning is darker along integral fold and top margin. Pencil notation to recto. .75" closed tear to bottom margin crease on second leaf. Some soiling on verso. Two areas of dried mounting residue to top margin of verso.
