[George Washington]. Facsimiles of Letters from His Excellency George Washington, President of the United States of America, to Sir John Sinclair Bart, M.P. on Agricultural and Other Interesting Topics. Philadelphia: J. T. Bowen, 1839. Quarto (8.5 x 11 inches; 216 x 279mm. Title page, half-title, 35 pages of 8 engraved letters of Washington in facsimile. Copy bound in quarter leather with marbled paper over boards. In these 8 letters written to Sir John Sinclair, dating from October 20, 1792 to November 8, 1797, Washington discusses agriculture and other related subjects of interest to both men. Sinclair founded the British Board of Agriculture, which was of interest to Washington the farmer. Sir John Sinclair (1754-1835) was a Scottish politician and writer on both finance and agriculture, and the first person to use the word "statistics" in the English language, in his vast, pioneering work, Statistical Account of Scotland, published in 21 volumes (1791-1799). Condition: Covers rubbed and dirty at edges, with loss of leather at edges and on spine; spine is chipped, with front cover loose and back cover weakening at hinge.
