Description

Two William R. Tittle Autograph Letters Signed with Copperhead Faction Content. Two letters written to his brother, Ralph W. Tittle, two days apart and mailed together. Includes: Four pages of a bifolium, 5.25" x 8.25", Camp at Warrenton Junction [Virginia]; July 27, 1863. Here Tittle discusses the movements of the 55th Ohio through Maryland and Virginia and some skirmishing they encountered. It reads in part: "...marched through Funkstown and formed in line of battle 1 mile south of Hagerstown our line run North and south the rebels showed a bold front that eavning they was some skirmishing a little to our left that eavning We had A harde rain that night We Carried rails and throwed up rifle pits We got but little sleep that Night the 13 We remained all day...they Was A little skirmishing a long the line the morning of the 14...Poppleton Was Wounded and taken prisoner at Winchester David Thomlin has been missing since then Sunday the 19..." Signed, "W R Tittle." One page, 7.75" x 5.25", no place [Virginia]; July 29 [1863]. Tittle discusses the Copperhead faction and his contempt for the Ohio politicians, Clement Vallandigham and Alexander Long, who were prominent leaders of the Copperhead movement which collapsed in 1864. It reads in part: "they have got defeated at all points for a While Morgan has been Captured at last 3 guess some of the Copperheads of the North has lerned something a bout the rebels protecting their property I am satisfied that the rebel sympathizers in the North is What has kept this War going on I mean if they had united in all the loyal state this War Would have been ended honorably but any man that Would support Vallandigham Noble or long is no man at all."
