Lt. Calvin Pierce Autograph Letter Signed with Skirmishing Before the Battle of Pound Gap Content. One page, 7.5" x 12", Camp Brownlow, Pikeville, Kentucky; March 13, 1862. In this letter to his sweetheart, Cordeal, he writes about the fighting he has encountered during the lead up to the Battle of Pound Gap. It reads in part: "I have just been preparing to go out upon a scouting expedition to Pound Gap...there are reported to be a body of some 800 Rebels there and they will have to fight or run. Last Sunday some of our Cavalry...had a skirmish with a Company of them. Killing 1 and wounding several, one of our men was wounded so seriously that he died last night. Our men found where they had hung a Union Citizen and shot another wounding him quite seriously. They cut down and buried the one that was hung. If we could catch the one who done the cowardly act I feel that he would suffer summary punishment..." Signed, "Calvin." Condition: Rubbed at creases. Light staining to left edge. Smoothed folds.
