Lt. Calvin Pierce Autograph Letter Signed Discussing the Evacuation of Cumberland Gap. Seven pages of bifolia, 4.75" x 8", Oak Hill, Ohio; October 6, 1862. In a letter written in pencil and addressed to his sweetheart, Cordeal, Pierce discusses their evacuation through more than two hundred miles of wilderness to Oak Hill in Jackson County, Ohio. It reads in part: "...it is probably one of the hardest marches of the war rendered more difficult by the want of provisions and water...one day we marched the entire 24 hours and for several days all the rest we had was what we got while resting for an hour or two to let the advance clear out obstructions which had been placed in our way by the Enemy...and when we arrived at Greenupsburgh we were a hungry, worn out, dusty, dirty, ragged, half starved set of fellows. Not less than 100 of our Regiments are entirely without Shoes, and more than half of them are suffering with sore and blistered feet, but it wouldn't do for them to fall behind on the march if they did they were sure to be shot or taken prisoner, by the enemy..." Signed, "Calvin." Condition: First page is faded, though still legible. Lightly rubbed and toned from age. Smoothed folds. HID03101062020 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
